Albert Namatjira

The Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission was the home of the famous Aboriginal artist, Albert Namatjira.

It is best known as the birthplace of artist Albert Namatjira whose house, three kilometres west of Hermannsburg on Areyonga Road , is today open to visitors.

“Albert Namatjira is the pre-eminent realist artist of Central Australia and the pioneer of the Aboriginal watercolour movement in the region, for which he is nationally and internationally acclaimed.”
ASCP Director Tim Rollason

Hermannsburg Historic Precinct in the MacDonnell Ranges

Situated along the Mereenie Loop Road, 130 kilometres south west of Alice Springs is the Aboriginal community of Hermannsburg and just beyond it, the stunning expanse of Finke Gorge National Park.

Travellers continuing west towards Kings Canyon on the new Red Centre Way formerly known as the Mereenie loop note that Hermannsburg is the last fuel stop and outlet to purchase a Mereenie Loop Pass (Access permit).

Hermannsburg is 565 metres above sea-level. An Aboriginal Community with app 400 residents. The buildings include a school, mess house, manse and quarters for the missionaries.

The church is now a museum which is distinctive because Dr. Strehlow planted two gums in front of the building and erected the church bell between them. One of the gums has died and the bell, which still stands, is rather incongruously propped up by a post on the right hand side.

Hermansburg churchHermannsburg

Hermannsburg was the German name chosen by the Lutheran pastors who established a small mission for the Arrernte Aboriginal people here in the 1880s. It is best known as the birthplace of artist Albert Namatjira whose house, three kilometres west of Hermannsburg, is today open to visitors.

Today the old mission’s whitewashed, German farmhouse style buildings have been fully restored.

Hermannsburg's Art and Artifacts

The Kata-Anga Tea Rooms are in the old missionary house and there is also a museum and art gallery.

The current artefacts available at the tea rooms are mostly examples of the famous 'sand painting' style (The correct name) known to some as 'Dot Painting'. They are painted mostly in the Old Colonists' House where visitors are welcome to observe the artists at work.
